Mosquitoes breeding in standing water?
Water that stands in your yard for more than a few days breeds mosquitoes. Where it hides on Jacksonville lots, quick steps you can take, and how to drain it for good.
Free yard inspection within 48 hours · written price before we dig
Mosquitoes need standing water to breed, and a Jacksonville summer supplies plenty: roughly 52 inches of rain a year, about half of it from June through September in storms of 2 to 4 inches at a time, on sandy lots over a hardpan that holds the water near the surface. Water that stands more than a few days is enough. Sprays treat the adults; draining the water removes the reason they are there.
Some breeding water is obvious, like a low spot in the lawn that ponds after every storm. Some hides: a clogged gutter, a buried downspout line that holds water, a catch basin with a blocked outlet, the saucer under a planter.
Why it happens
Low spots that pond
A corner of the lawn or a side yard that holds water for days after a storm.
Clogged gutters
Leaves and needles turn a gutter into a long, shallow pond on the roof edge.
Lines and basins that do not drain
A downspout line with no fall or a blocked outlet, or a basin with nowhere to send its water, holds water underground and in the sump.
Flat hardscape
A patio or pool deck that holds a puddle at one edge after every rain.
What you can check this week
- Walk the yard two days after a storm and mark everything still wet.
- Empty and turn over buckets, toys, saucers and tarps — anything that holds water.
- Clear the gutters and check that every downspout outlet actually flows.
- For water you cannot drain right away, products made for standing water are sold at garden stores; follow the label. They are a stopgap, not a fix.
The fixes, from the cheapest up
Which one you need depends on where the water comes from and where it can legally go — that is what the free inspection is for.
Catch basin at the low spot
A grated basin at the lowest point of the pond, tied to pipe to a legal outlet, so the spot is dry within hours of a storm.

Mosquitoes & standing water: FAQ
How long does standing water take to breed mosquitoes?
Water that stands more than a few days is enough, which is why the 48-hour mark matters: if a spot is still wet two days after a storm, it is worth draining.
What can I put in standing water to kill mosquitoes?
Products made for standing water are sold at garden stores; follow the label exactly. They are a stopgap for water you cannot drain yet. The lasting fix is to stop the water from standing.
Why do I have mosquitoes but no standing water?
Look where water hides: clogged gutters, the sump of a catch basin, a buried downspout line with no fall, saucers under planters, a tarp, a tree hollow. Neighboring yards count too.
Does draining the yard really reduce mosquitoes?
It removes the breeding water on your lot, which is the part you control. A low spot that drains within hours of a storm cannot breed them.
