Pool deck drainage that works in a Florida storm
A deck that floods at one edge, water under the screen enclosure, pavers sinking beside the coping — why it happens and how pool decks are drained.
Free yard inspection within 48 hours · written price before we dig
A pool deck that holds a puddle at one edge after every storm is one of the most common drainage calls on the First Coast, from Ponte Vedra Beach to Fleming Island. The deck is a hard surface that cannot soak anything up, often enclosed by a screen wall, often near a downspout, and often on ground where the water table near the coast and the river sits only a couple of feet down. The water needs a planned way out.
A bigger pump is not that way out. A drain at the low edge, a slope that sends water away from the pool and the house, and roof water piped somewhere else are.
Why it happens
The deck slopes the wrong way
Decks that settled, or were extended later, can fall toward the house or the screen wall instead of away from the pool.
A screen wall with no exit
Water reaches the knee wall of the enclosure and has nowhere to go.
Downspouts emptying onto the deck
Roof water from the lanai roof lands on the deck and runs to its low corner.
Pavers sinking at the edge
Water standing at the edge washes the bedding out, so the pavers there drop and make a deeper puddle.
What you can check this week
- After a storm, mark where water stands on the deck and how long it takes to clear.
- Check which downspouts empty onto or near the deck.
- Look for pavers that rock, have sunk or have empty joints near the puddle.
The fixes, from the cheapest up
Which one you need depends on where the water comes from and where it can legally go — that is what the free inspection is for.
Slot or channel drain at the low edge
A drain set into the deck at the low point, tied to solid pipe that carries the water away from the pool to a legal outlet.
$500 – $1,500 per pointCatch Basins & Channel Drains
Downspouts piped away
Lanai and roof downspouts tied into buried pipe so their water never reaches the deck.
$300 – $800 per pointDownspout & Underground Drainage
Relay the deck with the slope fixed
Sunken sections lifted, the base rebuilt and the slope reset away from pool and house.
$12 – $25 / sq ftPaver Driveways & Patios
Seal once it drains
Clean, re-sand and seal so the joints hold and the color comes back.
$1.25 – $3.50 / sq ftPaver Cleaning & Sealing
What will it cost?
Enter the square footage and the work — new pavers, sealing or a relevel — plus a channel drain if you need one.
Pool deck drainage: FAQ
How do you drain water off a pool deck?
With slope and a drain: the deck should fall away from the pool and the house, and where water collects at a low edge a slot or channel drain takes it into solid pipe to a legal outlet.
Do pavers around a pool need drains?
Not every deck. One that sheds water off its outer edge onto lawn that slopes away is fine. A deck enclosed by a screen wall or sloping toward the house needs a drain at the low edge.
Why are the pavers around my pool sinking?
Water standing at the edge washes out the bedding and softens the base. The section is relaid on a rebuilt base, and the water gets a way out so it does not happen again.
Can pool deck water go to a dry well?
Where the water table is low enough, yes. Near the coast and the river it often sits about 2 feet down in summer and the ground cannot take more, so we test first and usually route to the street or an easement.
