Travertine is natural stone — a limestone with a soft, tumbled look in ivory, tan and walnut tones — and it has become a standard choice for patios and pool decks in Northeast Florida. It is laid much like a concrete paver: on a compacted base, inside an edge restraint, with a slope that sends the rain away from the house and the pool. What differs is the stone itself. It is porous, each piece varies a little, and the pattern you choose decides how much cutting the job takes.
We lay travertine on patios, walks and pool decks at $12 to $25 per square foot installed, the same range as our concrete pavers. For driveways we use concrete pavers rated for vehicles. Existing travertine is cleaned, re-sanded and sealed at $1.25 to $3.50 per square foot, and pieces that sank or cracked are lifted and reset on a rebuilt base, matched as closely as the stone allows.

Travertine Pavers FAQ
Do travertine pavers get hot?
Light-colored travertine stays noticeably cooler underfoot than dark concrete pavers in full sun, which is a large part of why it is popular around pools. Darker travertine tones absorb more heat.
Can you drive on travertine pavers?
Thick travertine is sometimes used on driveways, but for driveways we use concrete pavers rated for vehicles and keep travertine to patios, walks and pool decks.
Does travertine need sealing?
It is porous, so sealing is recommended to resist stains and mildew and make it easier to clean. We re-seal on the same two-to-three-year cycle as concrete pavers.
Does sealing travertine make it darker or slippery?
An enhancing sealer deepens the color; a natural-finish sealer keeps the look of the bare stone. Around pools we recommend a finish that keeps the surface texture so it stays grippy when wet.
Are travertine pavers expensive?
Installed, travertine falls in the same $12 to $25 per square foot range as our concrete pavers in this area. The pattern and the grade of stone move it within that range.
